Professor Sanders came to Laurens in 1894 at the request of the Presbyterian Church, which housed the only Black school at the time. Professor Sanders’ achievements in bringing the education of Laurens Black Community from almost nothing to an organized system brought him respect from the local population. He started Sanders High School in 1937.
